Why the WiFi drops out where you need it most

Your router sends its signal out from one spot, usually wherever the broadband line comes into the house. That’s often a hallway or front room, which is rarely the middle of the home. Every wall the signal passes through weakens it, and some walls are far worse than others.

Old solid walls, chimney breasts, foil-backed insulation in extensions and loft conversions, and underfloor heating can all block WiFi. A garden office at the end of the lawn often gets nothing at all.

Plug-in boosters help a little, but they share the same weak signal. The reliable fix is to run a cable to where the signal is needed and put a proper access point or data point there. That’s what we do.

Solutions

What we install

Cables first, then WiFi where you need it.

01

Wired access points

Small units on the ceiling or wall, each fed by its own network cable, so every one gives a full-strength signal rather than repeating a weak one.

02

Mesh WiFi, wired up

Mesh systems work far better when the units are linked by cable instead of talking to each other wirelessly. We run the cables so your mesh does what it says on the box.

03

Data points

A network socket behind the TV, in the office or by the games console. Wired connections don’t drop out, and they’re the best option for anything that streams or makes calls.

04

Garden rooms and outbuildings

A reliable connection out to a garden office, studio or annexe, with the cable run properly protected outside.

Where we’re asked to help

Most network jobs start with one room that never gets a decent signal.

01

Working from home

A spare room or garden office that needs a connection you can rely on for video calls all day.

02

Smart TVs and streaming

Streaming boxes and smart TVs behave much better on a cable. If we’re wall mounting a TV, it’s the ideal time to add a data point behind it.

03

Larger and older homes

Long houses, thick walls and several floors, where one router was never going to reach.

04

Small businesses

Offices, shops and premises that need extra data points, tidy cabling and WiFi across the whole floor.

05

Telecoms

Phone extensions, new sockets and fault finding on existing lines.

How it works

Finding a route for the cable

The question everyone asks is how the cable gets from the router to the far room without wrecking the house. Usually it’s easier than people expect. Lofts, airing cupboards, under floors where boards lift easily and alongside existing pipes and cables all make good routes, and we’ll walk you through the one we plan to use before we start.

You keep the router your broadband provider gave you. We extend the network from it, so there’s no need to change provider or package.

WiFi and network questions

Sometimes, for a small gap. But a booster repeats whatever weak signal reaches it, so the improvement is often disappointing. A cabled access point gives a full-strength signal wherever it’s fitted.
Not usually. We look for routes through lofts, cupboards and under floors where boards lift easily, and explain the route before we start.
Yes. We run a protected cable out to the building and fit an access point or data point inside, so it’s on the same network as the house.
Yes. We extend the network from the router your provider supplied, so you don’t need to change anything with them.
