Where your phone line becomes your wiring

Your phone line comes into the house at the master socket, usually near the front door or in the front room. Everything up to and including that socket belongs to Openreach. Everything after it, the extensions running to other rooms, is your own wiring.

That split matters when something goes wrong. If the fault is in the line outside, it’s your provider’s job to fix. If it’s in the extension wiring inside, they’ll often charge to come out, and that’s where we come in.

We add new extension sockets, tidy up old ones, and find faults in internal phone wiring. Moving the master socket itself is a job for Openreach, but we can extend from it to wherever you need a line.

What we do

Telecoms jobs we take on

Small jobs that are a pain to sort yourself.

01

New extension sockets

A phone point in the office, bedroom or extension, run neatly from the existing wiring rather than a long cable along the skirting.

02

Fault finding

Crackling, a dead socket, a line that drops calls or slows the broadband. We test the internal wiring and find the problem.

03

Tidying old wiring

Years of add-ons, dead sockets and cable that goes nowhere. We take out what isn’t needed and leave what is working properly.

04

Businesses

Extra sockets and tidy telecoms cabling for offices, shops and premises, often alongside network cabling.

Digital phone lines

The switch to digital, and your extensions

The old analogue phone network is being switched off across the UK, and landlines are moving to digital.

01

What changes

On a digital line your home phone plugs into the broadband router instead of the wall socket. Calls travel over the broadband connection.

02

What it means for extensions

Extension sockets wired from the master socket may stop carrying calls once the line goes digital, because the phone signal now starts at the router.

03

Your options

Depending on the house, the existing extension wiring can sometimes be fed from the router, or cordless handsets around the house may be simpler. We’ll look at what you’ve got and tell you which makes sense.

04

Things that use the phone line

Some alarms, telecare pendants and older payment terminals rely on a phone line. Check with their provider that they’ll work on a digital line.

Try this first

A quick test for a faulty line

On most modern master sockets the lower half of the faceplate unscrews to reveal a test socket. Plug a phone, or your router, straight into the test socket. If the fault disappears, the problem is in the extension wiring inside the house, and that’s something we can fix. If it’s still there, the fault is on the line, so report it to your provider.

Not comfortable taking the faceplate off, or not sure what you’re looking at? Give us a call and we’ll talk you through it or come and test it.

"Outstanding work. Great communication with Lee at every point about what could and couldn’t be done. Consummately professional and very good value for money. I’d highly recommend and will definitely use again. Top operator, and one to be highly trusted."

TV installation, new digital aerial, cable rerouting and disposal of the previous system

"As I am a widowed older person I was cautious in contacting Cox AV to look at my TV and aerial. I needn’t have worried. He was quick, his work good… I would not hesitate to recommend him. Thank you Lee."

FAQs

Telephone extension questions

Yes. We run new extension wiring from your existing setup to a new socket in the room you need it, kept as tidy as the house allows.
Openreach and your provider are responsible up to and including the master socket. Wiring after that, including extensions, is the homeowner’s. The test socket behind the master socket faceplate tells you which side the fault is on.
Not always. On a digital line the phone plugs into the router, so sockets wired from the old master socket may stop working for calls. We can look at whether your wiring can be fed from the router, or suggest cordless handsets instead.
No, the master socket belongs to Openreach, so moving it is their job. We can extend from it to wherever you need a phone or broadband connection.
Yes. Extra sockets, fault finding and tidy cabling for offices, shops and other premises around Chichester.
